How to plan the entertainment for your child’s birthday party

Taylor Wasserman · Owner and Founder|October 21, 2026|3 min read

What to book, how long to book it for, and when to have your artist start, so none of the time you paid for gets eaten up.

1st birthdays are a family affair — the baby may not remember, but a caricature drawing of the whole family can capture it forever. Balloon designs, face painting and glitter tattoos for the cousins and siblings, and handprint paintings with your baby’s name and age for that extra keepsake. A few birthdays later, your child starts picking their favorite!

What works well at birthday parties

6 things worth deciding before the day

  1. Judge the start by when guests actually arrive

You know your guests better than we do. Some families are extremely punctual, others are more the fashionably late type, so think about when people will really start arriving rather than the start time you gave them. You never need everyone there, but you don’t want to lose hired time by starting before their arrival. How many guests you want there first depends on which service it is, and we go through all eight in when to start your party entertainment.

  2. Count every guest, not just the party kids

Cousins, older siblings, and the “big kids” like to join the fun, so don’t count them out. Depending on the service you are getting, for example, glitter tattoos, you may think it is just for kids, but think about when your child asks to get matching tattoos with you or their cousin. Or balloon twisting that becomes a fun character or animal you love; we all have that little kid inside of us, and parties are meant to bring that out in us.

  3. Let your child pick

Ask your kids — they know what they like. If you would like a second opinion, tell us the ages on your booking/inquiry form, and we will happily suggest a mix.

  4. Skip the number system

It feels kinder to call out names so nobody stands in line, but it is slower. Every minute spent calling a number and waiting for a child to come and sit down is a minute of the time you booked. Our artists are fast, and the line forms and clears on its own. Enjoy your party; your hired professionals will handle the crowd.

  5. Add time in small increments

There is a one-hour minimum per artist and per service. After that, you can add time in small increments, so you are never paying for a whole extra hour to cover the last five guests.

  6. Have an indoor backup

Our artists show up rain or shine. Deposits do not get refunded due to weather. A garage, a patio, or a cleared dining room is all it takes, and is worth deciding before the day rather than during it.

First birthday? The baby will not remember it, so the things worth booking are the ones that outlast the day — a caricature of the whole family, or a handprint painting of your baby’s hands or feet with their name and age on it are definitely services to consider.

Questions we get asked

When should the entertainment start?
It depends which service you have booked, and on your guests. You know them better than we do: some families are extremely punctual, others are more the fashionably late type, so think about when people will actually start arriving rather than the start time you gave them.

It also depends on which service it is, because each one draws a different part of your guest list. Nearly every child wants face painting, so that one is worth a crowd: about a third of your guests is plenty to get a line going. Caricatures draw the adults as well, so a family of four can be four caricature guests. Henna is mostly for the teens and the adult women.

There seems to always be guests coming over an hour into the party, and if your artists start at the beginning, those guests will walk in right as the artist is leaving. You never need everyone there, but you do not want to lose hired time by starting before their arrival. We go through all eight services, and what order to run them in →

How much time should I book?
On the pricing page, pick your services and open “Not sure how long to book?” underneath them. Put in how many guests you’d like serviced and we’ll suggest a length for each service you’ve chosen. As a rough guide:
  • Face painters & Balloon twisters can do 20 designs an hour, guaranteed.
  • Glitter tattoos range from 15–20 an hour depending on the number of colors the kids choose.Tip: Kids often like to get two, and the “Big kids” can unexpectedly like to join in, so we suggest rounding up with 15–30 min extra buffer time.
  • Hair spray ranges from 20–25 guests.
  • Fancy nails range from 8–10 sets of nails.Tip: Removing nail polish before the party will speed up the process.
  • Handprint Painting ranges from 10–12 an hour. The more details requested, the more that number could be affected.
  • Henna tattoos range from 10–15 depending on the size of the design.
  • Caricature drawings offer a wider range of options (b/w vs. color, face-only vs. full-body). Depending more on whether the guests are seated promptly and on the chosen details, they range from 3 min to 15 min per person.Tip: Since it is not just for the kids, you’ll want to consider your whole guest count and base it on the majority. We say at least 2/3rds of your guests will want one.
If you’d rather we worked it out, put your guest count on the booking/inquiry form and give us your party goals.
Can you match my theme?
In most cases yes, depending on the service. Add your theme to the booking/inquiry form so we can note it for your artist.
Are there travel fees?
Sometimes — usually $25–$35+ per artist, depending on artist availability in your area. We’ll always tell you before you book.
